I played 8 Golden Skulls of Holly Roger Megaways in demo mode at $2 a spin, and this is definitely one of those slots where you can tell straight away that it is built around chasing a much bigger hit. The pirate theme works really well, with an all-female crew, treasure chests, golden skulls and a proper deserted-island feel around the reels.
Being a Megaways game, the number of ways to win changes with each spin and can reach up to 117,649 ways, so some spins suddenly open up into a huge reel setup. The Rolling Reels mechanic was probably my favourite part of the base game because every winning combination disappears and new symbols drop into place, giving you the chance of landing several wins from a single paid spin.
Mystery treasure chests can also transform into matching symbols, which can turn a fairly ordinary-looking spin into something much better. The Firepot Golden Skulls are what you really want to see though, because landing three or more awards one of the displayed cash prizes, with the values increasing as more skulls land.
At $2 a spin the balance can move quickly because of the high volatility, and there can definitely be quiet patches, but the Rolling Reels and skull hunt give you something to watch for on virtually every spin. It feels like a traditional pirate slot mixed with Megaways mechanics, and there is enough going on in the base game to keep me interested while chasing the bonus
