I played Annihilator in demo mode at $2 a spin and this one definitely has a very different feel compared with the usual bright casino slots. The whole game is themed around the Canadian metal band Annihilator, with a dark gothic backdrop, guitars, creepy dolls and Jeff Waters appearing as the Wild symbol.
It uses a classic 5-reel, 3-row setup with 10 fixed paylines, but there is quite a lot going on behind the fairly simple layout.
The base game can be pretty volatile, so there were definitely stretches where not much happened, but the random In Command feature helps break things up. When it triggers, any Wild symbols on the reels expand to cover the whole reel. If the expanded Wilds don't create a win, the game gives you a respin with those Wild reels held in place and keeps going until a win or feature lands.
At $2 a spin I liked that you always felt as though something could suddenly kick off, especially when multiple Wilds landed together. The soundtrack and darker theme won't be for everyone, but if you like high-volatility slots with proper features instead of constant tiny wins, Annihilator is definitely an interesting one to play.
The bonus
The bonus side of Annihilator is where the game really starts to get interesting. Playing at $2 a spin in demo mode, there are three main features to look out for, and each one plays completely differently.
The Fun Palace feature triggers when three doll Bonus symbols land across reels 2, 3 and 4. You then choose from creepy dolls to reveal cash prizes. Smaller prizes from 1x to 5x your bet let you keep choosing, while bigger prizes from 10x to 50x end the feature. You can also uncover the Scatter symbol, which takes you straight into the Free Spins round.
The Set the World on Fire feature starts with 8 Free Spins. During these spins an expanded Wild reel is always present and moves left or right before each spin, leaving a trail of fire behind it. If a Wild lands on one of the highlighted positions, that whole fiery trail can turn Wild, which can create some very strong setups.
Each additional Scatter also awards another 2 Free Spins, with up to 50 spins possible.
For me, this is definitely the strongest part of Annihilator because the moving Wild reel and fire trails mean every spin can develop differently. It suits the heavier, chaotic theme perfectly and gives the slot much more excitement than the fairly traditional reel layout initially suggests.
