I played Lucha Maniacs by Yggdrasil in demo mode at $2 a spin and it turned out to be a really entertaining older-style slot with a lot more going on than I expected. The Mexican wrestling theme is bright, colourful and full of personality, with masked luchadores, a packed arena and plenty of movement around the reels.
It uses a classic 5-reel, 3-row layout with 20 paylines, so the gameplay is easy to follow, but the wilds and bonus possibilities stop it from feeling too basic. The base game can be a little up and down, although I found there were enough smaller hits to keep the balance moving while waiting for something bigger.
What I like most is that even landing just two bonus symbols can trigger the Poster Bonus Game, so there is still a chance of getting something when you narrowly miss the full feature. The 96.2% RTP is respectable and the medium-high volatility gives it a nice balance between steady play and stronger hits.
It may be an older Yggdrasil release, but Lucha Maniacs still looks good, runs smoothly and has plenty of character. Definitely one I would play again in demo mode.
The bonus
The bonus is easily the strongest part of Lucha Maniacs and gives the game much more depth than the base play suggests. I played it in demo mode at $2 a spin, and once the Free Spins feature landed the whole slot became far more interesting.
Three bonus symbols award 7 Free Spins, four give 15, while landing five can give 30 Free Spins. Before the spins begin you get feature modifiers, and this is where Lucha Maniacs really stands out. There are more than 20 possible features and combinations, including extra wilds, sticky wilds, stacked symbols, multipliers and other reel enhancements, so two bonuses can play completely differently.
The modifiers can also combine, which gives the feature the potential to build into something much stronger than a standard free-spins round. Retriggers can add even more spins and features, so there is always something to watch for rather than just waiting for the reels to stop.
I also like the Poster Bonus from two scatters because it can award coins or even push you into the Free Spins. Overall, the bonus is fun, unpredictable and easily the reason I would return to Lucha Maniacs.
