How it works
- Total staked = bet per spin × spins per hour × hours.
- House edge = 100% − RTP.
- Average cost = total staked × house edge.
The real result of a session varies widely around this average, more so on high-volatility slots.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate the cost of playing a slot?
- Multiply the total you stake by the house edge, which is 100% minus the RTP. Total staked is bet per spin × spins per hour × hours. £0.50 spins at 400 an hour for 3 hours is £600 staked; at 96% RTP the average cost is £24.
- Does RTP tell me what I will win?
- No. RTP is an average over millions of spins. In one session you can win far more or lose far more than the average cost. It is useful for comparing games and for budgeting, not for predicting a result.
- Why compare two RTPs?
- Many slots are released in several RTP versions, for example 96% and 94%, and casinos choose which one to run. The lower version costs half as much again per hour for exactly the same play. The game's info screen shows which version you are on.
- What is a good RTP for a slot?
- Around 96% is standard for online slots. Above 97% is high, and below 94% means the game costs noticeably more to play. See our list of the highest RTP slots for games at the top end.
